The Frisco Mail Service.
(By Telegraph.)
WELLINGTON. August 11.
Particulars of the arrangements with regard to the San Francisco mail contract which appear to have been made the subject of some disparaging remarks by J udge Windeyer, of Sydney, are that when New South Wales withdrew under the clause giving it that privilege New Zealand agreed to permit mails to be carried and steamers to go on to Sydney for £7OOO a year. This sum went in reduction of the New Zealand subsidy. The
Pacific Mail Company applied for half and were, offered £2500 which they refused. In a pamphlet issued by the Company in 1886 they throw all the odium of lose they had incurred on New South Woles which made the Judge’s remarks all the more unexpected.
