A CRISIS IN TONGA.
MR BAKER TURNED OUT.
(Bz Telegraph.)
AUCKLAND, July 22.
Arrived—Wamui from Tonga,
The High Commissioner of the Western Pacific, Sir John Thurston, visited Tonga in H.M.S. Bapid lately. The result is a startling crisis. Several Tongan chiefs swore that if the Hon Shirley Bakey, the premier, remained in Tonga he would be assassinated, together with the chiefs associated with him. bir J. Thurston then exercised his powers under the Western Pacific Orders in-Oouncil, and issued an order for Baker’s deportation, and he was offered accommodation on H.M.S. Bapid. Mr Baker declined this and took a passage for himself and family in the Wainui. Baker's goods were bundled out of his house and all their servants left them, but the goods were afterwards returned by order of the King, pending the departure of the Wainui. All political prisoners have been liberated. The new Tongan ministry is composed purely of natives, Tukuate being Premier, and Tugi Minister of Lands. It is reported that officials are being sent from Fiji to assist in the administration of affairs. Mr Oampell, collector of customs, is secretary to the Cabinet.
