Commenting on the proceedings of our Harbour Board the other day the Christchurch Press says :—“ The natu al inference from all these mysterious proceedings is that there is some apprehension of injury to the port being caused by the accumulation of travelling shingle outside the harbour works. If this be so, we agree with the Timaru Herald that not only in justice to shipowners and captains, but also in the best interests of the port, there ought to be no mystery about the matter. Let the difficulty be openly stated and discussed, and we have no doubt means will be devised of getting rid of it. To try to smother it up will not only be useless but imbecile. The sooner all local bodies learn that the ostrich policy is neither prudent nor beneficial the belter it will be for everybody concerned, and particularly for their own interests.”
