BAD WEATHER.

A strong southerly gale sot in about mid night with rain squalls, and hos continued ever since, making the weather to-day exceedingly wintry, and raising a heavy sea. The rainfall in town has not amounted to much, 'I ho gale at sea has had its effect on the shipping southward bound. The s a. Penguin, bringing the remains of the late Mr Turnbull from Wellington to Lyttelton, has been greatly delayed by the head wind and sea. The s.s. Colac was due here early this morning as she left Lyttelton at 3 p m. yesterday. As she was empty, coming for a load of produce, she would have a hard fight with the adverse ■' elements, and had to take refuge in Akaroa. The Beautiful Star loft Lyttelton lust evening for Ibis port via Afcaroa, and by an enquiry made at noon, the agents here ascertained that she had not then reached Akaroa. The gale appears to have been as powerful, or more so, on the east coast of the North lelaad, a telegram stating that the Eotomahana i from Auckland was nearly twelve hours late at Gisborne, on what is ordinarily a 22 hours run. The s.s. Brunner of course came in all right with wind and sea behind her, from Dunedin, and was followed by the Eakanui on the same course.
