Mackenzie County Council.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Mackenzie County Council was bold at the council offices, Burke’s Pass, on Monday, July, when the following members weie present Messrs John McGregor (chairman), William Saunders, James I. Milne and A. Cowan. Mr David Campbell waited on the council with reference to the formation of a road to his perpetual lease section at Mount Neaaing. •—The overseer was instructed to inspect and report at next meeting.^ COEEESPONDBNCB.
The Waitaki County Council wrote, announcing the satisfactory completion of the Ohau bridge, and requesting payment of the council’s promised contribution of £2OO. The amount was passed for payment. Mr H. W, Andrew, Hawke’s Bay, forwarded circulars and testimonials of his poisoned grain for small birds. The Tinder-Secretary, Wellington, wrote forwarding a copy of a letter received from the Levels Road Board expressing their willingness to boar half the cost of the maintenance of the road., from Cave to Pareora Eivor. The Levels Road Board wrote with reference to the same road, that the board found they were in error in supposing that it was not the boundary between the Levels Road District and the Mackenzie County, and it being the boundary they were willing to bear half the cost of maintenance as requested by the council.
A circular was read from the Waiarapa North County Council, suggesting that power should be given to county councils to levy special rates over the whole county for the purpose of providing interest on loans to renew bridges of the value of iS4OO and upwards, without taking a poll , of the ratepayers. The co-operation of the Mackenzie County Council was invited in the matter. — Consideration was deferred until next meeting.
The Property Tax Commissioner, wrote forwarding a form of declaration for signature, entitling the Council to balance of subsidy under The Local Bodies Finance and Powers Act.
The secretary to the Canterbury Trades and Labour Council wrote, forwarding a copy of a resolution passed by that body, that Public Bodies be requested, when accepting tenders for worts, to take into consideration whether the amount of the tender will allow the payment by the tenderer of a fair rate of wage to his workmen. —Received. The Mount Peel Koad Board, in reply to the council’s application for half cost of work done in improving the channel of the Opihi river at the Fair lie Creek foot bridge, wrote forwarding a cheque for the amount, and stating that the board considered they should have been consulted previously to the work being carried out, and requesting that in future this might be done where work of any magnitude is required,—lt was pointed out that the work, when undertaken, was not expected to be a costly one or the board would have been consulted in the matter.
Mr 8. Fsler, and four other ratepayers of Fairlie Creek, wrote] requesting that 12 chains of Gordon street, reserve 1840, might be formed, and pointed out the necessity for something being done. —It was decided to have the street formed as requested. Mr E.. Foster, Sheep Inspector in charge, wrote at length in reply to the report of Messrs McGregor and Sounder!) on the South
Canterbury rabbit fence, and also forwarded a copy of Inspector Thomson’s reply to him on the same subject.— The letters wore received. MISCELLANEOUS. It was resolved that notice bo given to all occupiers of properties in the county allowing gorge to spread on the roads, that the same must be cleared. It was decided that Mr F. A. Slow, Fairlie Creek, be granted a fresh lease of gravel reserve No. 1681 for a term of ten years, at a rental of £9 per annum. It was resolved that the resolution passed at the previous meeting of the Council, making a special order increasing the harbour rate to one farthing in the £, be confirmed, and that the seal of the council bo affixed thereto. - Accounts amounting to £305 lls 7d wore passed for payment and the council rose.
