THE BROWN EMBEZZLEMENT CASE.

(By Telegraph.) CHRISTCHURCH, July 8. David Hastings Brown was charged this morning on remand with embezzling money the property of the Bank of New Zealand. The bench consisted of Messrs J. P. Jameson, H. J. Hall, B. Currey, and F, J. Kirabell. Mr Fisher appeared to prosecute on behalf of the bank and Mr Hmbling was in attendance. Mr Stringer appeared for the accused. Mr Fisher opened the case and called evidence as follows ! James Enabling, Inspector of the Bank of New Zealand at Christchurch, deposed—l know the Canterbury Roller Mills. They were the property of the bank, since February 28th, 1889. The stock of wheat flour was the properly of the bank also, and remained in the hands of the bank till Feb. Ist, 1890. Accused was manager for the former owner and when the bank took possession remained manager. The bank increased his salary from £4OO to £SOO with a free house. The bank made an arrangement with Kaye and Oorter to appear as nominal lessees of the bank, they managing the clerical part of the business. The account at the bank was called the ‘‘Canicrbury Mills, operated by Kaye and Carter," the property belonged to the Bank of New Zealand, and accu-»-vl knew that the bank was carrying on the mills and that they wore the bank’s property. Patrick Hanrahan, farmer snd baker at Ashburton, said: —I had 18/ sacks of wheat in the mill, principally Hunters white, for gritting. Accused agreed to charge Is a bushel for gristing and was' to pay the railway freight from Dromore and charge to me. Accused gave me an advance of £lO6 5s on the wheat, and I was to repay the loan as I took away the flour. Accused paid £,06 5s to ray credit at the bank. I made the firct payment of £2O on account, on September 12th, 1889,_ when jeousedgave me the receipt produced, in his own handwriting. I paid him another £2O on October 2nd, and on October 26th £57 3s Id, and the balance on December 4th, viz., £7l 10s. (Evidence incomplete ) Accused was committed for trial.
