NEWS OF THE DAY.

A man with a loaded gun in his possession committed wanton mischief among the seagulls on the Washdyke spit yesterdaj. No fewer thou balf-a-dozen poor birds were counted on the beach “ winged ” or otherwise painfully maimed by the cruelty of this so-called “sportsman.” At the annual sale of horses held yesterday at the Washdyke Yards there was a large entry of both draught and light horses, but, with a few exceptions, in each class tho quality throughout was from second rate to inferior. Messrs Gracie, Maclean and Co. offered 78 head and sold 34 at up to £l9 10s for medium draughts, and up to £l4 10s for hacks.

Tho Salvation Army “fowl banquet” last evening proved to be a popular affair, though hard upon the fowls, “ The best spread wo have ever seen in Timsru”was attacked by a gatheiing too largo for one sitting, and everybody had a good time. The meeting afterwards, when the local corps were given “ a good send off ” for another year, was well attended. The children’s tea is to be given this evening. During conversation at tho close of tho annual meeting of the Jockey Club last evening, it was remarked that tho committee had not yet decided whether trotting events should be included in the programme for next meeting. A decided opinion was expressed that trotting being a distinct branch of sport, should be fostered by clubs formed for trotting only. The 0.J.0. rules are against any other recognition, Mr P. Morrison, one of the New Zealand team of amateur athletes who recently competed at the New South Wales championship meeting, returned toTimavu by the Southern express train yesterday. Mr Morrison was met on arrival by Mr Olulee, of tho South Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club, and other gentlemen, and was most cordially congratulated on bis success at the championship meeting. Mr Morrison is looking very well after his trip, and has enjoyed himself very much. Among the “ trophies ” brought back by him is a very large photograph of the New Zealand champions, which he is very proud of, and which has been greatly admired.

1 Mr P. W. Eiby occupied his chair as secretary for the South Canterbury Jockey Club ! for the last time last evening when engaged at the annual and committee meetings. During his term of office Mr Eiby has pleased the members of the club very much by the quiet and thorough way he carried out his duties. We desire to Join in the regret expressed at bis retirement, and to thank him on behalf of the press reporters engaged at the club’s meetings for the courtesy ho has always extended to newspaper men. It will be seen that Mr M. P. Dennehey has been appointed to succeed Mr Eiby. A very successful gathering was held under the auspices of the Temuka Caledonian Society on Friday evening last, the attendance as usual being very large. During the interval the president, Mr Clark, addressed those present 011 the subject of the sufferings of the survivors of tho Light Brigade, one of whom had already died of starvation. Ho read an extract from Zinglake’s ” Invasion of tho Crimea,” and asked that all would contribute something, however small the amount might be, towards tho object of alleviating the sufferings of those gallant men who had taken part in tho memorable " Charge of the Light Brigade.” Lists were taken round when over £9 was subscribed and it is expected that at least £lO 10s will be received.
