WANGANUI, June 4
At the adjourned meeting of the Wanganui Meat Preserving Company held to day, experts were appointed to examine the accounts. It was reported that the bulk of the losses had taken place during the last twelve months, and that Mr F. E. Jackson’s figures, produced at last meeting, were absolutely correct. The report and balance sheet for the past year were adopted, the future of the company being left in the hands of the dire dors.

The bridge over the Buller Elver at Lyell is costing much more than was expected. A large sum extra was put on the Estimates last year and it is now found that at least £3OOO more will be required. It has been finally decided to appeal to the Privy Council in the now famous case Poaka v. Ward, and the necessary security has been given. The decision of the Appeal Court in this trial had the effect of upsetting a large number of native titles in the North Island, and it was through it Parliament passed the Act creating the position of the Native Land Commissioner, filled by Mr Edwards.
Tbe Hutt County Council have the bailiffs in, being unable to pay the costs incurred in testing the legality of their action in erecting the toll gates.
DUNEDIN, June 4.
At the Benevolent Trustees’ meeting the chairman (Mr Solomon) said that the number of applications for admission from old and worn-out men was becoming alarming. It was impossible to admit them as every ward was full. Only that day six had applied. The members appeared to be of opinion that it would be necessary to make a levy on the Charitable Aid Board to increase the accommodation.
Mr G, J. Binns, late of the Mines Department, has been offered by cable and has accepted a position as manager of an extensive colliery near Burton-on-Trent, England. The formation of a musical society was decided upon to-night at a large meeting ,of members of the Exhibition choir and others, A students’ association has been formed in connection with the Otago University, with the view of controlling the various ceremonies and promoting the interests generally of tbe students. An expression of regret, condolence, and sympathy, is to be forwarded to the family of Mr Mansford, the late registrar.
With the June number Zealandia, the monthly magazine, ceases publication. The Rev. B. Hutson, late of Whangarei, who was recently inducted to Ravensbourne Presbyterian Church was welcomed to night by his congregation at a soiree.
