NEWS OF THE DAY.

A meeting of the officers of the Primitive Methodist church was held last evening to consider proposals for heating the church during the winter months. After considerable discussion it was decided to have gas stoves put in. Mr G. Bdgeler addressed a meeting in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Teciuka, on Saturday. Mr W. L. Duncan occupied the chair, Mr Edgeler took for his subject the inequalities of wages and the desirability of forming a labour union. He was accorded a patient hearing, but the proceedings were without any practical result. We have to acknowledge receipt of copies of the programmes of the Grand National Steeplechase Meeting, to be held in Christchurch on July 24th, and of the Christchurch Hunt Steeplechases on July 26th, from Mr Charles J. Penfold, secretary to the Canterbury Jockey Club. The following is a list of letters from places beyond the colony received at the post office Timaru, during the month of March, and unclaimed on the 31st May, 1890: —W. Davoy, W. Duffield, Richard Fannin, Frank Hall, Arthur Hislop, W. J. Peters, K. Sando and 00., E. P. Sireth, W. J. Upton. Mounted Constable Pascoe, who has been stationed about two years in Timaru. received word yesterday that ho had been transferred to the charge of Clinton. During his stay here Constable Pascoe has earned the esteem of his chief officer, and has made a wide circle of friends. His duties here will le taken up by Constable Crawford.

On Monday, at the Resident Magistrates Court, Waimate, before Mr J. Sinclair, J.P., Robert Bowman and Robert Stevens, charged with drunkenness on the previous day, were let off with a caution. Yesterday at the same court and before the same Justice, Julius Kelsey was fined 10s, or to be imprisoned for twenty-four hours, for drunkenness. John Hennessey, for a similar offence was fined ss, or twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. The Timaru Lodge, United Ancient Order of Druids, held their usual fortnightly meeting last evening. There was a fair attendance, and Bro. D. Evans, A.D., presided. For sick pay £5 was pa -sed for payment, and one candidate was initiated into the order. P.A. Bro. Boulden, secretary, was elected delegate to the District Grand Lodge meeting to bo held at Christchurch on Friday next, the sth instant. The receipts for the evening were £5 3s, and the expenditure £7. The lodge closed at 10 o’clock in due form. A meeting of gentlemen interested in the formation of a society to further the interests of music in Timaru was held in the Assembly Rooms on Monday night. Mr Sidney Wolf was voted to the chair, and after discussing the opinions of those present, a motion proposed by Mr W. J. Huggins and seconded by Mr 0. Wood, that a society to be called “ The Timaru Orchestral Society ” be formed, was carried unanimously. The following officers were then elected:—Mr P. C. Williams, secretary ; Mr J. Hooper, treasurer, and Mr B. IHlton, librarian. At present the members of the society number sixteen, but it is anticipated that several ladies will also take part. The Assembly Rooms have been engaged to practice in, and it was agreed to practice every Monday night at 8 o’clock. The meeting then adjourned with the usual vote of thanks to the chairman. Several proposals in reference to rules and other business were held over till next meeting. A draughts match was played at the Mechanics’ Institute, Tomuka, on Monday night, between members of the Pleasant Point and Temuka Clubs. When play was finished the teams adjourned to the Crown Hotel whore the visitors were hospitably entertained by the local men, and a very pleasant hour was spent. The following were the players Pleasant Point—Messrs J. MeAlastor, A. Campbell, W. Anderson, B. Smith, W. Aitken, G. Beck, H. Doeselt, J. Thompson, 0. Dixon, and W. Stewart. Temuka—Messrs J. Sim, A. Beck, H. Oldfield, W, Storey, E. Chapman, R. Bennett, P. Donby, D. Leach, R. Drysdale, and J. Lee. The match resulted in a win for Temuka by 27 games to 9, four games being drawn. Mr W. G. Rutland kindly acted as referee. It is expected that a match Timaru v. Temuka will be arranged for at an early date.
