A fine large barque, the Ardmore, under charter to the N.Z.S. Co., was sighted off Saltwater Creek this morning, and there being no wind the tug went out some miles to meet and bring her in. The Ardmore comes in ballast from Brisbane, having left there 16 days ago. Captain Cormaok reports having had a fair weather passage except fob a hard S.W. blow on Friday and Saturday, off the Snares. The barque Duke of Argyle, now on her way from Adelaide to this port, is to load for the Canterbury Farmers’ Co-operative Association. The Duke of Argyle will make the fifth vessel loaded by the Association this season, for Home, an excellent record, and one that is not likely to be beaten this year. The two large now cargo steamers which the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company, Limited, are about building for the trade of the colony, will make a total of five steamers of this class running under their flag, and this will enable the company to organise shortly a monthly service with these boats from New Zealand to London, in addition to their monthly service of passenger steamers carrying the ! mails. Recognising the rapidly growing importance of the trade in dairy produce, these steamers have on the recommendation of the local agents, been all fitted with cool chambers ; and although the trade is expected to be very large next season, shippers of butter and cheese to the Home markets will find that th.e company has made very ample provision for their wants. The total meat capacity of the five cargo steamers will be over 200,00(1 carcases mutton, and as they will make t’.vo trips under the 12 months, this a largo addition to the carrying power qj the line. These steamers are all built with a view to the requirements of the ports of. Timaru and Oamaru. Already two of them have visited Oamaru, and will call at Timaru whenever nducement offers.
