With a view of increasing the accuracy of the weather forecast Mr C, J. Wragge, of the Government Meteorological Department, is endeavouring to secure daily observations from Singapore, Batavia, and Banjoewangi.

THE SUGAR MILLS AND BLACK

LABOUR.

Sydney, April 30.

At the meeting of the Colonial Sugar Company to-day it was stated that the question of the stoppage of black labour in Queensland had been carefully considered with the result that the sugar industry could not bo carried on in the tropics without Kanaka labour. The company had arranged for seats to bo made in suitable districts in Fiji with a view to removing the Queensland mills there. FEDERATION. In the Legislative Assembly Sir H. Parkes has given notice that the federation proposals agreed upon at the Melbourne conference be discussed on Wednesday. He intends to propose that Messrs William McMillan (East Sydney), J. P. Abbott (Wentworth), J. R, Garvan (Eden), and himselff from the Legislative Assembly, and Messrs E. Barton, Jennings, and W. H. Suttor, from the Legislative Council, shall be the New South Wales delegates to the next federation meeting. The Opposition are annoyed at Mr G. R. Dibbs, member for Murrumbidgee, being overlooked, and the omission of his name from the list is likely to cause trouble. HARVEST RETURNS. Adelaide, April 30. The final harvest returns give the average yield to be 3 bushels 55 pounds to the acre.. WHOLESALE SWINDLING. Several clerks engaged in the company formed for taking over the assets of the commercial bank have been arrested for issuing receipts to the allotment forms. THE-ARAWA. Hobart, April 30. The R.M.S. Arawa, from London via the Cape, arrived here at 4 o’clock this morning, and sails for New Zealand at noon to-morrow. She brings 34 passengers for Australian ports, and G 4 for New Zealand.
