CONSECRATION OF ARCHDEACON JULIUS.

CHRISTCHURCH, May 1.

The consecration of Archdeacon Julius as Bishop took place this morning in the Cathedral. The admission was by ticket and was limited to 800. The doors were announced to bo open at 10.30., but half an hour before numbers were crowding round them. The congregation which filled the cathedral was essentially representative of the diocese over which the Bishop-elect would preside. The chancel was tastefully decorated with chrysanthemums and geraniums. The clergy having robed in the tower entered the cathedral by the western doorway and passed up the nave to the chancel led by the precentor the Rev. W. Dunkley, followed by tho choir, clergy, and canons, the Dean preceded by his verger, bearing the mace, the Bishop-elect, was similarly attended by the Bishops of Waiapu, Dunedin and Nelson, Bishop Harper, the Primate (Bishop of Wellington) preceded by his chaplain Archdeacon Fanoourt bearing the Crazier. Tho hymn “ Onward Christian Soldiers” was sung as a processional. The Communion Service was said by the Primate; Bishop Nevill read the Epistle; and Bishop Suter the Gospel. After recital of the Nicene Creed, the Primate preached taking for his text the I Timothy IV, 16 —“ Take heed to thyself and unto the After referring to the vicissitudes through which the church had passed until the present day, he spoke of the duties of bishops, especially with reference to the preaching of sound doctrine and defending the word of God against the assault of unbelievers. He addressed the Bishop-elect and referred to the high estimation in which his former work os Archdeacon Julius had been hold, and pointed to the eminent example of the Yen. Bishop Harper whom he would succeed. The Bishop-elect was presented to the Primate for consecration by Bishops Harper and Suter. The Hon. H. B. Gresaon, Chancellor of the Dkcese, read the Primate’s mandate for consecration. The Bishop-elect made the Declaration of Obedience to the Church of the province of New Zealand. The Litany .was then intoned by the precentor. The questions appointed were put by the Primate, and answered by tho Bishop-elect in a clear audible voice. A special hymn, the words composed by the Dean and the music by Mr G. F. Fendall, cathedral organist, was then sung, followed by the “ Yeni Creator ” sung in unison without accompaniment, the congregation all kneeling. The imposition of hands having been made by all the bishops present, the bible was handed to the newly consecrated Bishop by the Primate. At the conclusion of the consecration all the clergy present partook of Holy Communion.
