Mr Jellicoo’s application for change of venue in Mrs Cbcmis’s charge of perjury against Detective Benjamin was taken before
Judge Richmond in banco this morning. After hearing argument His Honour said Mrs Ohemis had been bound over in a certain sum to. appear at the Supreme Court at Wellington, and he thought it quite clear • he had no jurisdiction to alter the statute in that respect Sufficient ground had not been set forth for a change of venue, even • if he had power to grant it. He was not inclined to believe that a grand jury in Wellington would bring in other than a fair verdict. In commenting on the result of the perjury cases in the lower court, tho local press were perfectly within their rights. The proceedings before the magistrate were closed and so wero open to legitimate criticism. Costs were allowed, 15 guineas.
