The annual ball of tbe Timaru Naval Artillery comes off in tbe Columbia Bink build ng this evening.

Someone ought to see to the sea baths, and have something done to clear out the quantities of dead sprats it now contains, and to prevent fresh accumulations, or there will be no going near the place soon. The football match played in the Temuka Park on the Queen’s Birthday between Darktown (Temuka) and Cambridge (Christchurch) resulted in a win for the former by 6 tries to nil. Mr Gunnion umpired for Dark town and Mr Fisher for Cambridge. Mr Fh'nt acted as referee. Aft or the match the Cambridge men were enter fccinrd by the local club at the Crown Hotel. The funeral of the late Mr Pelham Jones, who died from injuries received through a fall in a hurdle race at Dunedin last week, will take place at Waimate at 230 p.m. tomorrow. In consequence of this the usual Tuesday meet of the Waimate harriers will not be held.

The harbour presented a busy appearance on Saturday. Two steamers and a schoooner being worked at the main wharf, and the dredge getting big bucketfuls in a gap between the steamers; a schooner working at the Moody wharf; locomotives shunting trains to and fro; tipping going on regularly and noisily at the north mole; the breakwater well-spriukled with fishermen from end to end; and a big crowd of gulls picking up a livelihood all over the harbour; altogether made up a picture of great activity. In consequence of complaints about drunken and quarrelsome men going to and from the shipping, particularly on Saturday nights when steamships are in the port, the Harbour Board have obtained the assistance of the police to patrol the whaif and breakwater. This' avrangemont came into force on Saturday night last when two constables were on duty there till midnight. Since Andrew Shaab, night watchman, was discharged, the Harbour Board’s watchman has not been sworn in pi a special constable. The Right Rev. Dr Grimes, Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch, preached at Vespers yesterday in St. Joseph’s Church, to a large congregation. The day being. one of the festivals of the Blessed Virgin Mavy, Bis Lordship took for his text the well-known canticle, “ My soul doth magnify the Lord,” and gave a discourse explanatory of the high position held by tho Blessed Virgin in the Catholic faith. At the commencement of his sermon, His Lordship made a brief reference to the loss the Church and the district bad sustained by the death of Madame Sullivan.

On Thursday evening last the choir and Sunday school teachers connected with St. Saviour’s Church, Temuka, and a few specially invited guests, met at the Oddfellows’ Hall to bid farewell to Miss Ladbrooke. In the course of the evening the Rev. T. A. Hamilton presented Miss Ladbrooke with a handsome silver the gift of the choir and teachers, as a token of their regard. Mr Bryavs returned thanks for Miss Ladbrooke, and spoke of the kindness with which she bad been treated, and her regret at leaving the district and her numerous friends. The evening was spent in singing, dancing, games, etc,, and the gathering dispersed about II p.m.

At the Waimate Resident Magistrates Court on Saturday, before His Worship the Mayor (Mr F. Slee), William Nicholson, of Makikihi, was charged with disturbing the school at Makikihi on the 23rd instant, with threatening behaviour towards the teacher, and with wilful damage by breaking the door of the schoolmaster’s house. Defendant pleaded guilty, and said that he was under the influence of drink at the time. The first two charges were dismissed, the bench cautioning the defendant. On the charge of wilful damage he was convicted and fined £2 and costs 12s, and ordered to pay 15s to repair the damage done to the door; and in default of payment seven day’s imprisonment.
