Crooked Running at Dunedin Races.
(By Telegraph.) DUNEDIN, Max 27. Strong comment is made in sporting circles with reference to St. Clair’s running on Saturday. When the Birthday Handicap was won by his stable companion St, Clair was never prominent, but in the Provincial Handicap he simply romped away from the field. Ho certainly had 111 b less to carry than on the previous day, while tho horses ho ran against were not reduced at all, but given that in, the change of form was as startling as in any of the sensational cases. A similar instance previously occured on this course, and this naturally excited a dissatisfied feeling. A large number of spectators gave vent to their dissatisfaction in no measured terms, and it was very generally antipicated that the stewards would take some steps to obtain a satisfactory explanation of St Clair’s iu-and out running but no protest was lodged, and no action was taken. Of course no one ever hinted that the owner of St Clair had any hand in hoodwinking the public as to the actual capabilities of the horse j the general feeling was that the trainer should have been called on for on explanation, and as several of the stewards were in favor of such being done, it is to be regretted that the wishes of a large proportion of the public were not accoedcd to.
