(By Telegraph.) AUCKLAND, May 2-1. The Thames Valley and Rotorua Railway Company is to be wound up. The body of a man whoso name is unknown has been found in the Kumca River. A store and two houses in Mount Eden road were burned this morning. The total damage is £ISOO. The insurances are £250 in the Imperial and £BOO in the New Zealand office. It has been decided to form a central temperance union as an advising board for the various temperance organisations of this district, WELLINGTON, May 24. The estimate of the population of New Zealand at the end of March exclusive of Maoris was 610,156, or including Maoris 653,125.
The Mayor’s ball to the Governor at tho Garrison Hall this evening was largely attended. The building was splendidly decorated and lit with electricity, NELSON, Mat 24, Mr Richardson, Minister of Lands, who arrived last evening, visited the orphanage, asylum, hospital, and other institutions today, and spent much time in tho land office. Ho leaves lor Wellington to morrow. DUNEDIN, May 24. At a meeting of tho Grand Lodge of Otago and Southland, E. 0., it was decided to forward a letter of welcome to Lord Onslow, and a letter of condolence to the Canterbury Lodges in respect to the loss by death of Dr Deamer.
