Waimate Borough Council.

A meeting of the Waimate Borough Council was held on Monday last. There were present His Worship the Mayor, Mr F, 81ee, and Councillors H. Watts, A, Watt, Evans, Jones, Cameron, and Forsbrook.

The following correspondence was read and considered:

From Sydenham Borough Council, asking co-operatipn in getting the Government to pass a Bill to enable boroughs to ensure their town buildings.—Beceived. From D. Mitchell, asking for a yearly license for a hall in John street. —License granted. From the Commissioner of Crown Lands, asking upon what roads the council intended spending moneys accrued from the lease of Crown sections.—The clerk was instructed to attend to the matter.

From Dr Stacpoole, reporting that typhoid fever was very bad in the town, and stating that he thought it mainly duo to bad water in the wells.

After some discussion it was decided to leave the matter over until next meeting, and, if the fever got worse, to tako into consideration tho appointment of a health officer.

From Mr D, Smith, asking to have shingle n Maud street attended to. —The engineer to attend to tho matter.

From tho Audit Inspector, stating that ho

would bo in Waimate, to audit the books, on tho 14lh inst.—Received. From the Inspector of Nuisances, reporting for the month.—Received. From the reserves committee, reporting on Victoria Park, and the letting of certain borough sections.—After considerable discussion it was decided—" That the report of the reserves committee bo adjpted, and the ploughing and harrowing the oval outside tho cricket pitch be done by day labour, and that the oval be sown in English grass ; all largo stones to be carted away. The amount not to exceed £B.” Mr Clement handed in a statement of accounts placed in his hands for collection,— Laid on tho table. Mr W. McLeod applied-for a license for his slaughter-house on R.S. 5647, Waimate. It was decided to grant Mr McLeod a license. Two tenders were received for the Borough pound for one year. J. E. Freeman offered £5, and E. T. George, £4. Tho tender of J, A. Freeman at £5 was accepted. Accounts amounting to £59 0s 3d were passed for payment. r iho engineer was instructed to call for tenders for shingling Victoria Terrace and Racecourse Road. The council then r^se.
