THE VANCOUVER-AUSTRALIAN MAIL CONTRACT.

Ottawa, May 11.

The Parliament of the Dominion has limited the Yanoouver-Auatralian mail contract to ten years. An amendment moved by Mr Launells to the effect that the advantage to be derived from this service did not justify the amount to be paid as a subsidy, was rejected by a majority of 22. The voting was as follows For payment of the subsidy 77 ; against 55.

DEATH OF FATHER DAMIEN.

THE COLLIERY STRIKE

Over 100,000 colliers are out on strike in Westphalia. Another collision has occurred between the military and the strikers, in which several of the latter were killed and a number injured.
