GREAT FIRES.

LOSS OF LIFE(Per Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Per Press Association.) New York, April 20. Wilcox’s lard refinery, elevators, wareouae, etc., extending for half a mile on the river front, have been destroyed by lire. This is the largest fire which has visited New York for years. The loss is estimated at 3,000,000 dollars. Melbourne, April 22. A disastrous fire broke out at 5.30 this morning in the Bijou Theatre, which, together with the Palace Hotel adjoining, was destroyed. The fire was still burning at 10 o’clock, but was under control. The scarcity of water was severely felt, and the brigades were rendered helpless. Three firemen were killed by a falling wall, and three others were seriously injured. It is believed that the damage will exceed £BO,OOO, but owing to the holiday no accurate information can be obtained.
