Carbine had the call in the betting, and left the paddock at even money, 2 to 1 being laid against Abercorn, 6 to 1 against Australian Peer, and 8 to 1 against Lochiel. From an even start Cranbrook rushed to the front and made the pace for his stable companion. At the end of two furlongs Cranbrook had drawn ten lengths clear of Lochiel, who was lying second, with Carbine and Australian Peer next, in that order, Abercorn last. Much the same order was maintained until the last four furlongs from home, when Carbine ran up to Lochiel, and Cranbrook had increased his lead. Coming down the straight the two New Zealanders closed on the leader, but Hales noticing Oranbrook in trouble, brought Abercorn along with a rattle, and at the distance had the lead. Here, however, Carbine came again, and desperately fighting every inch of the run homo succeeded in wresting the lead. It was, however, only momentarily as Hales sat down on the Hon. Mr White’s representative, and then ensued one of the most desperate finishes ever seen on a racecourse, Abercorn getting home a neck in front of the doughty son of Musket. The Australian Peer was beaten off third, six lengths away. Time—2min. 42sec. A.J.C. Sires Produce Stakes; 7 furlongs. CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB’S AUTUMN MEETING. CHRISTCHURCH, April 22. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting was favoured with fine mild weather, considering the latehess .of the season. The course, as shown by the good time made in the Great Autumn Handicap and in the Champagne Stakes, was in good going order. The attendance was equal to average Easter Monday meetings. The fields were good, and the racing of a very interesting description, as the absence of great cracks left the various events very open, fiockburn was allowed to walk over in the hurdle race, owing to the withdrawal of Irish King. In the Templeton Stakes, one mile, Adulation and Erin-go-bragh were the favourites, but never flattered their backers, and Sir Julius won a good race from Chudleigh. For the Great Autumn Handicap, Vandal had slightly the call on Ravenswing in the machine, but the remainder of the field were all well supported. St. Clair made the running for upwards of a mile, when her condition failed, and Eavenswing coming on won with something in hand by a couple of lengths, and paid her backers the nice dividend of 5 to 1. The winner was bred by the Middle Park Stud Company. The Champagne Stakes saw a quartette of youngsters saddled, including the unbeaten Cynisca, besides tried animals like Dunkeld, Morrio England, and Scots Grey. Cynisca was first beaten, and Scots Grey, hardly fit, allowed Merrie England to win a little comfortably in good time. The winner, a very nice colt, was bred by the Middle Park Stud Company. Rainbow, a daughter of Cadogan, won a good race for Mr Stead in the Welter, and Musk Deer, an Auckland bred filly, took the Buesley Stakes for Mr Hereford and paid another good dividend. £5738 was passed through the totalisator during the day.
