An American paper says f—The pronunciation of some fashionable Anglo-maniac clergyman is getting to be very much like that of the English clergyman who in reading the passage “He that hath ears to hear, let him hear,” gives it “ He that jhath yahs to yah, let him yah.” According to careful calculations made by a British clergyman of note and just published, Protestants have increased during the last hundred years from 37,000,000 to 134,000,000, or nearly fourfold. The Sydney Telegragh says “A discussion has been going on in Melbourne and is mentioned in the society papers of that city as to whether the term ‘ Excellency ’ should be used in addressing the wife of a Governor j for instance, ‘her Excellency Lady Carrington,’ or ‘ her Excellency Lady Loch.’ It has never been done in these colonies, but Lady Blake, wife of the rejected of Queensland, has raised a teapot storm in Jamaica, where her husband was afterwards appointed, by insisting that she shall be addressed as ‘ your Excellency,’ a term which, rightly or wrongly, the Jamaicans refuse to accord. It is said that at the Colonial Office Governors’ wives have the title of Excellency, and also that Lady Brassey, when she was in the colonies, invariably used the form of ‘ Your Excellency Lady Carrington or Lady Loch.’ It is not a point of very great importance, but as a strict matter of fact ‘ Her Excellency ’is correct. A Governor’s wife is so styled by courtesy, but only when resident in the colony under her husband’s governorship."
