The American Exporter thus mixes up geography s—There is no longer any doubt as to the possibility of good iron being produced from the “ black sand” found so abundantly in parts of New Zealand. The works at Hawaii, until on unfortunate accident put a stop to operations, turned out iron of excellent quality continuously, four tappings beipg made in twenty-four hours. New furnaces of large capacity are to be erected.
j The Canterbury and Otago book almanac for 1888 will be published to-morrow. It contains a great mass of useful and interesting information and is fully up to the standard of previous years. The publisher I has requested us to state that a book now j being offered for sale named the South Canterbury Almanac has no connection with the old established Canterbury and Otago Almanac published at the Timaru Herald office.
At the statutory annual meeting of the Geraldine County Council this morning, Mr Balfour was elected chairman for the ensuing year; Messrs Balfour, B. A. Barker, T. J.M. Hayhurst and W. Moore to represent the Council on the S.O. Hospital and O. A. Board; and Messrs Balfonr and W. B. Howell on the Timaru High School Board, The board passed a special vote of thanks to Mr Talbot, the late chairman for his long and eminent services, and after transacting routine business, the Council rose.
A considerable crowd collected this afternoon in front of the right-of-way between the old Times office and Mr Melville Gray’s office, to witness Sir Andrew le Fleming’s further treatment of the big black horse. The animal was very indocile, but he was at length conquered, and Sir Andrew rode him easily in Gracie Maclean and Adam’s sale yards. He is a magnificent beast and properly broken would be ahorse to be coveted. The following Salvationist magnates passed through Timaru to-day by express train for Dunedin: Colonel and Mrs Taylor from India, and Commissioner and Mrs Howard.
The District Court sittings to-day closed a few minutes after eleven this morning and the Judge left by the afternoon train for Christchurch.
Here is a chance for enterprising “ male persons.” Sir Geo. Grey’s “Election of Governor” Bill (clause 2) provides as follows: —“ Every male person, being a British subject, of not less than years of age, shall be eligible to the office of Governor under this Act."
