Stabbing CaseMASTERTON, June 23. A man named Jno. Williams went into the bedroom of a settler named T. Hurley at the Union Boarding-house at midnight, and was stabbed by the latter in the groin. Hurley was brought before the B.M. and remanded for a week. BurglaryWELLINGTON, June 23. A man named Thomas Thomson appeared in the Conrt this morning on five charges of burglary and house-break-ing at the Hutt. Considerable sums of money and jewellery have been lost by residents there. Thomson was remanded for a week. A Large Claim. A compensation case begun to-day in which the Trustees of the Rhodes estate claim £IO,OOO from Government for land taken for the Battery site and damage to estate. An Outsider’s Opinion. A leading English Statesman who has visited Now Zealand, writing to Sir G. Grey, speaks in commendatory terms of the Industrial School Reformatory system, and especially of the plan of bordering out pursued in some of the Colonies. He also says he was much
impressed with free education, after visuing the schools and enquiring into the system. FootballWESTPORT, June 23.
