News has been received from Upper Burmab that a force of 80 rebels surprised the British position at Bhamo and set fire to tbe barracks and guardhouse of that town. They killed three British soldiers, who were asleep in the guardhouse, and then decamped,having lost three of their number in the encounter.

Princess Beatrice, wife of Prince Henry of Battenbnrg, gave birth to a son to-day. The Committee of the Imperial Institute has issued a private circular to the colonial Governments, and propose submitting collective proposals with reference to the Imperial Institute.

The British political resident has formally annexed the island of Socotra, situated to the north-east of Cape Gardafeu on the African coast. This has been done in consequence of Germany having annexed the Island of Magudora on the coast of Samanli.

Sir R. Hamilton leaves for Tasmania after Sir G. C. Straohan arrives in England. Mr Thomas King will be buried in Kensal Green Cemetery, and the Rev. Gaiter Symes will Officiate, Lady Blythe sent a wreath. £IOOO has been granted by Government for the representation of art at the Jubilee Exhibition. The Port Darwin and Buckn'all’s Gold Mining Companies are allotting shares, although neither has been fully subscribed. Sir Daniel Cooper has joined the Pacific Cable Syndicates
