EMPLOYMENT WANTED.
Judging by the fact, remarks the Melbourne “ Age,” that 1780 _ applicahave been made for 2C3 vacancies in the Railway Department, that branch of the public service stands high in the estimation of professional men and mechanics of all kinds. The task of registering the names has just been completed by the Secretary of Railways (Mr Labertouche), assisted by Mr Panton, P.M. For 12 students for engineering and architecture only the required number of applications were received. Six students were required to assist in preparing land plans, but only three applications were made. This is the only case in which the number of applications was less than the number advertised for. Thirty-one applicants applied for the position of three boys to assist artisans in the Engineer for Existing Lines branch. The traffic branch requisitioned for 70 men for employment as porters, pointsmen or shunters, and had 473 applications ; and 25 boys for block signal boxes, for which there were 78 candidates. In the locomotive branch 57 candidates anply for the position of 2 blacksmiths, 7 for boiler-makers (2), and 6 for coppersmiths (2). In response to the requisition for 15 engine-cleaners there have been 544 applications, for 2 strikers 66 applications, 10 ordinary laborers 162 applications, 2 apprentices to carriage and waggon work 27 applications, 1 carpenter 25 applications, 45 junior clerks 277 applications. Only one telegraphic instrument maker applied for once va cancy. According to the Regulation of the Railway Management Act, the candidates are being reduced by ballot to three times the number required by each requisition. This will be completed promptly, and will be followed by the usual medical test examination.
