Mr Robert Gillies has resigned bis seat for Bruce owing to continued ill health. Mr James Reid, o! Milton has been elected President of the Otago Educational Institute.

Wm. Baden, previously convicted at Wellington of sly grog-selling in connection with brothels, was yesterday fined £SO or three months’ imprisonment for sly-grog-selling. At a meeting at Wellington, Hia Excellency the Governor presiding, it was decided to establish a branch affiliate! to the English St. John Ambulance; Society, Lady Jervois is patroness, and Lady Yogel and Mrs Stout are on the Committee.

The criminal calendar at the Supreme Court at Wellington, to be held on July 6th, comprises four cases of larceny, one of horse-stealing, one of receiving stolen property, one of jewel robbery, and one of false pretences. There has been forwarded from Auckland to Wellington the first instalment of petitions in favor of prohibiting barmaids from serving in hotels. A conversazione was held last evening la the Congregational Church, North street. A Christchurch telegram says A case of some importance as affecting the interpretation of the new Bankruptcy Act with regard to fraudulent preference, was beard before Mr Justice Johnston to-day, J. M. Morgan, a bankrupt heteUkeeper, had made 9 payment of £lO to Vincent and Co., one ot )Mtf creditors, abpqt sis weeks before bis bankruptcy. The Official Assignee contended that under danse 27 of the amendment Act vf 1881, this amounted to a fraudulent preference. His Honor found that the payment had not been voluntary pn the debtor’s part, but the result of pressure Jby the creditor, and proper effect could not fee given to the words of the section unless it was a voluntary payment and not one to get rid of tfie debt. The Official Assignee’s motion to declare the payment void was therefore refused.
