Rewi and Native TraditionsNew Plymouth, Juno 15, A telegram from Whitecliffs states that Rewi, who was accompanying Wetere from the Waikato, on reaching ■Mokau had to return home, being too ill to proceed. Rewi was coming to Waitara to dig up the mere buried at the foot of the main support of the house built to commemorate the Waitara meeting in 1878. As Wetere wishes to remove the house to Mokau according to Maori ideas, the mere can only be removed by the original depositor, or those closely connected with him without danger to life so great is the tapu. Tho body of a seaman belonging to the steamer Suva, named Wm, Moore, missing some days, was found in a water closet on the Queen’s Wharf this morning. One of the cables across the straits will be duplexed, and it is not expected that any serious delay will be experienced. Man Missing. The police have found a punt bottom up, in which Liardet attempted to cross Lake Wairarapa, His fowling piece was strapped to tho side of it and several other articles, belonging to him, were found fastened in it. Dunedin, June 15

Mr Sheath’s stables at Tapanui were burnt down on Saturday night. Eight horses were destroyed. The building was insured in the Union Office for £SO and the contenis for£3sß. A five-roomed house in the same township was also destroyed by fire. It belonged to Hugh Stewart, and was insured in the Victoria Office for £l5O.

The Irish Volunteer Corps has been informed by tho Minister of Defence that as hostilities are now improbable, Government will only accept tho services of new companies as honorary corps. Tho members have decided to offer their services on that fooling. The Minister in his letter expressed satisfaction at tho public spirit which prompted the offer.
