The s.s. Tarawera has returned from her second trip to the Sounds, glorious weather has been experienced throughout.

The Geraldine School Committee have nominated Messrs Amos, Sherratt, and W. J. Steward to vacant seats at the Education Board.

The vestry of St. Mary’s Church, Geraldine have determined upon holding a garden party and gift auction on March 27, in aid of the funds of the Church. The Victorian bowlers were badly beaten by the Dunedin Club on Saturday. The game ended at 5.30 with a total score for Dunedin of 135, Victoria 96, Dunedin led all the way. The ketch Gatlin, which sank at Gatlin’s Biver, is insured in the New Zealand office for £SOO. It is not yet known whether operations to raise her will be successful.

Mr George Gould, of Christchurch, has presented, for a prize at the Interprovincial Champion Fours competition at the Heathcote Begatta, a new 4-oared outrigger boat, by Olasper. It is valued at £SO. Langdown of Christchurch and Cutten of Dunedin, had several bicycle contests at Dunedin on Saturday, Cutton won the one and ten mile championships of New Zealand, Langdown winning the five mile race.

The “ Youth” Company will to-night present at the Theatre Koyal, Boucicaulfs popular play “ London Assurance.” The cast is a strong one and the reputation already won by this high-class company leaves us in no sort of doubt that the performance will he excellent. The statutory meeting of householders for the purpose of electing a School Committee, for the Timaru district will be held this evening in one of the Public School rooms, at seven o’clock. At six o’clock there will be a meeting of the outgoing Committee to adopt the annual report and balance sheet. The same proceedings will take place in every school district in the colony.

The events on the Wellington regatta programme which were postponed from Tuesday last wore got off on Saturday. The weather was fine, with a fresh northeast wind blowing. The Volunteer boat race was won by the Petone Navals ; the Handicap Yacht Race by Sappho (Bmin), The Pet (7min) a bad second ; the Gamma won tho Second-class Yacht Pace by fully four miles ; the Ships’ Boats Go-as-you-please race was won by a crew from the ship Margaret Galbraith. The Coasters Race was struck off the programme.

A Dunedin telegram says the weather is all that can be desired for the crops, and that the farmers “ pray for it to continue.” It is to be hoped the Canterbury farmers will not be outdone by the Oiagausin piety. A deputation from the Manawatu County Council has waited on the Premier and the Minister for Public Works to request that a sum be placed on the Estimates for a line through the Manawatu Gorge to the Foxton-Taranaki line. The Ministerial replies were decidedly favorable.

Fourteen immigrants, ex s.s. Bombay at Lyttelton, arrived in Timaru by the evening train on Saturday, and were immediately escorted to the Immigration Barracks where they were open for engagemen this morning. They consist for the most part of single girls. Sydney Tawhanga wants Rewi and other chiefs to join him in memorialising the Queen against the surveys of the King Country. It is also said that this active native will canvass for support in his candidature for a seat in the House of Representatives.

The body found at the Bluff, Onehunga, is that of a young man of about 25 years, of slight build and fair complexion, with a small light beard. £4 in money and a silver watch were found on him, and by bis side a small bottle containing some fluid. It will probably prove to be poison. An inquest will be held. So far, the body remains unidentified.

A Wellington telegram says that it has been discovered there that Magistrates have for a long time past been imposing penalties of under 20s for drunkenness, while the lowest legal penalty is that sum. Last year there were 140 more convictions at Wellington, for drunkenness than in the previous year, which is attributed to the large number of arrivals by direct steamships who get on the spree on landing. The Oamaru Captain of the Salvation Army was assaulted at the door of the barracks on Sunday night as the services were about to commence, by six or seven young roughs, There has been a sort of ill-feeling on the part of the roughs to the Captain, and it culminated last night in an attack on his person. The police arrested one of the assailants. Some peculiar disclosures were expected to be made when the case came on.

In the Supreme Court, Wellington, on Saturday, the case of Regina v. Hon, Jno. Martin, M.L.C., was heard before Judge Richmond. It was a suit brought to recover £6OO damages in respect to a small piece of land forming a portion of the approach to the Eutt bridge which it was alleged defendant had many years ago sold and conveyed to the Provincial Government, but the conveyance of which not having been registered defendant had since obtained a title under the Land Transfer Act and resold to another party. All the evidence on each side was taken, and the law points were adjourned for argument in lonco.
