ST. MARY’S SUNDAY SCHOOL.

WAIMATAITAI BRANCH. A soiree musicdle was held last evening in the Waimataitai school building, in aid of the funds of the branch school. The affair was under the direction of Mrs Woollcombe, who has for a long time past conducted the school with great energy and success, and that lady was assisted by Archdeacon Harper and a number of friends residing in the vicinity. The meeting took the form of a social reunion, with musical and dramatic interludes. The ' fine main room of the school had been tastefully arranged with a curtained stage at one end, and a side table on which fruit and other light refreshments were placed and dispensed by a number of lady volunteers, the whole being plentifully garnished with flowers, and beautifully arranged. One of the class rooms was transformed, for the occasion, into a refreshment room in which tables were laid, and tea and eatables served at a nominal charge. The appearance of both rooms was very tempting. The audience, which consisted largely of ladies, did not fully assemble till nearly 8 o’clock, and the buzz of conversation went pleasantly on, broken now and then by music and other attractive exhibitions. Everyone appeared to heartily enter into the spirit of the thing, and a most enjoyable evening was spent by all; though perhaps the performers did not get quite the wrapt attention which their efforts merited. Meetings of this kind cannot fail to please, and not the least conspicuous feature of the affair was the heartiness with which a number of little girls, attending the school, participated in the pleasure of the evening. The results, financially, were satisfactory, and great credit is certainly due to the band of untiring ladies who, under Mrs Woollcombe’a able direction, vied witheach other in minister, ing to the comfort and enjoyment of the visitors.
