The Customs duties are expected to be £40,000 below the estimate. Mails* Albany, Jan. 3. Arrived yesterday evening, in King George’s Sound—P. and 0. steamship Carthage, with, the inward mails vifi Suez and Brindisi, dated London, Nov. 30th. Shipping* Sydney, Jan. 3. Sailed, this s.fternoon—Union steamship Rotomahana, for Auckland; and P.M. steamship City of Sydney for San Francisco via Auckland. Fire at Sea. The steamer Tomki returned to port to-day, reporting that when 30 miles 1 from the Heads last night, it was found that a fire had broken out on board,, and that one of the passengers had losthis life by suffocation. Grain. Melbourne, Jan. 3, The agricultural reporter of the-, “ Leader” estimates the yield; of wheat in Victoria for the present season at' 14.900.000 bushels, being an average of 14| bushels to the acre. Th e quantity available for export is estimated at--8.160.000 bushels. Wool. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited) bateresumed their series of wool auctions after the holidays. The catalogue today comprised 4000 bales, the bnllr consisting of small parcels of mediu.m to inferior wool. There was a le.rge attendance of buyers and brink competition was experienced. Choice and medium wools were in good demand and prices wore firmly maintained. Nearly all the lots were sold at satisfactory prices, bat owing to the length of the catalogue parcels of scoured and fleeces have been held over until to-morrow.
