The case, Hunt v. Gordon, now before the Appeal Court, is closed, and judgment is reserved.
About £6OO was taken at the Olde Bnglishe Payre in Wellington, on Saturday and Monday.
The boy Steele, who was injured at the fire in a factory at Mataura on Monday, is dead. The father is in a critical condition.
The Inspector of Schools, Mr J. Gurr, has reported very favorably of the Otaio School as to the work and discipline.
The four recently appointed official assignees have conferred with the Minister of Justice, in Wellington re the duties of their office. The householders of Pareora district are to be called together for the purpose of expressing their opinion as to the recent action of the local School Committee in regard to the teaching staff. Mrs Sampson yesterday laid the foundation stone of a new Salvation barracks in Auckland. Over £l5O was placed on the stone. The leading clergy and citizens were present. The South Canterbury Caledonian Society announce in an advertisement that their ninth annual gathering will be held at Timaru on January 1 and 2. Nominations for the handicaps must be made on or before 22nd inst. The sum of £8929 was passed through the totalisator at the Dunedin Jockey Club Spring meeting. The principal winners were—“ Stephenson, £450; Butler, £ll4 ; Hon. G. Maclean, £9O ; Wallace (trotting), £9O ; A. Smith, £6O ; Driver, £6O ; Walls, £SO; Cotton, £SO. The Australian Mutual Provident Society intend abolishing the present system of agencies and establishing branch offices under the management of gentlemen who have received their training at headquarters, Business under the new system will be begun in Auckland, Christchurch, and Dunedin with the new year. The agents who now retire from taking an active part in the business will receive substantial recognition for their services from the directors.
At the first meeting of the Mackenzie County Council on Monday at Burke’s Pass, Mr McGregor was elected Chairman, and Mr Marchant appointed Clerk, Treasurer, and Engineer. It was resolved that Mr Clulee should bo employed to report upon financial matters, as between the new county and the Geraldine Council. Mr W. Tosswill was appointed solicitor to the Council.
