Over twenty-five civil cases had been set down for hearing at the B.M. Court to-day, but they were all withdrawn or judgment was confessed. A meeting of the Fire Brigade was held last evening, the Captain, Mr T. Amos, presiding. A quantity of routine business was transacted, and the Captain was appointed delegate to the Conference of Fire Brigades at Nelson on January 16, A cheque for £75 was received from the Fire Insurance Association, and it was resolved to apply to the Council for an advance on the half-yearly allowance to assist the Brigade to pay for the new uniforms. A general meeting of the Caledonian Society was held last night at the Grosvenor Hotel. It was determined to apply to the Eailway Department for certain train facilities in connection with the forthcoming meeting, and to ask Mr Jowsey (who was formerly attached to Her Majesty's 15th Hussars, and who is a duly qualified Drill Instructor) to act as judge in the single-stick contest. It was decided to offer the gates and privileges at auction on a date to be fixed.

A meeting of the Hospital Commissioners was held this morning. Present—Messrs T. W. Hall, (in the chair), and F. LeCren. A quantity of routine business was disposed of, and accounts amounting to £232 8s Id, were passed for payment, £59 of the amount being payable to Mr Murdoch for painting, &c. The House Steward, Mr Jowsey, reported upon the work of Mr Murdoch as exceptionally well done.

A Government daylight parade of the C Battery ia ordered for to-morrow evening at seven o’clock, In order to become efficient every member mast attend at least four such parades within the year. As only two have as yet been held, the absolute necessity of attending all the daylight parades that may be ordered this month will be at once apparent. The Hon Mr Mitchelson (Minister of Public Works) arrived in Timaru lest night, by special train.at 8.30. He was accompanied by Messrs Maxwell, Blair and Back. This morning the Minister attended by the same gentlemen, with Mr Austin, District Engineer, and Mr J. H, Sutter, M.H.R, for Gladstone, left Timaru at 8,15 by special train for Fairlie Creek to inspect the Albury extension, which is now completed as far as the Creek. The party is expected to return this evening. After dining at the Grosvenor on his return, the hon gentleman , will proceed South to-night by special train. The funeral of the late Mr T. Swinton will leave Winchester at noon to-morrow for the Temuka cemetery. The members of the Winchester Lodge (Masonic) and Visiting Brethren will attend the funeral in regalia. The companions of St. John’s Royal Arch Chapter, Timaru, are also requested to attend the funeral.
