NEWS OF THE DAY.

Sub-Lieutenant Lyons, of the Dunedin Nayal Brigade, has had his commission cancelled. The appointments are gazetted of Mr 0. Y. O’Connor as Under-Secretary for Public Works, and Messrs 0. 0. Graham, B. C, Latter, J. Ashcroft, and J.Lawson, as official assignees for the colony. The Christchurch Drainage Board have struck a new rate. There is a great deal of discontent, and the legality of the rate will probably be tested in the Supreme Cour A Chamber of Commerce has been established at Nelson. Mr James Solanders and Mr J, H. Cock are Chairman and ViceChairman respectively. At the Auckland Wesleyan district meeting four new churches were authorised to be erected in country districts, at a cost of over £3000; also three native churches in native districts. The amount received for the Sunday School Union Industrial Exhibition, was stated to be over £BOO. The Auckland City Council intend entertaining the retiring Mayor, Mr J. M. Clark, at a dinner, and presenting himwfth an address. Steps are being taken to present him with a testimonial at the completion of his third term of office. The new organ at St. Luke’s Church, Christchurch, which is a magnificent instrument was opened last night with an organ recital. There was a very large audience. In the Appeal Court, Wellington, yesterday, the case of Stone v. Atkinson was argued The appeal is from a decision of Judge Gillies, relative to the seizure of the barque Gazelle, owned by Stone Bros., for smuggling on the part of the captain. Judgment was reserved. In the case of Wheeler v. Meek (Dunedin), an application for a new trial was granted on payment of all costs. Mr Mitchclson, the New Minister of Public Works, will be sworn in to-day at Wellington, before Uis Excellency the Governor. The Auckland College will probably have a school of medicine attached. Steps are now being taken to establish such a department of study. The Artillery Band was welcomed by the citizens last night. They played a number of piece.-, at the foot of North street, and a considerable number of persons assembled to bear them.

Mr C. Howard has been appointed Receiver of Land Revenue for Southland, At the request of Mrs Graham, Mr Jonas has kindly given the use of the Theatre for the next rehearsal of the entertainment in aid of the Public School prizes. “O.E.D.,’’ in the “Lyttelton Times” suggests a combination of shippers of meat throughout the colouy to form an Agency Company to undertake the distribution of meat throughout the United Kingdom, with a capital of £250,000, in £5 shares, the first issue of 10,000 shares to be distributed throughout the colony as follows :—Christchurch, 2000 ; Dunedin, 2000; Wellington, 1500 ; Auckland, 1500 ; Nelson, Napier, Invercargill, Oamaru, Timaru, and Wanganui, 500 each. The proposal is for the establishment of a large depot in London and the large towns in the United Kindom.

He poured a kettle of boiling water over her head and face. Dr R. Harris, the Government medical officer, dressed the wound. The patient is shockingly disfigured. De Witt Talwage says As long as we have reasonable wants we get on comfortably, but it is the struggle after luxuries that fills society with distress and populates prisons, and sends hundreds of people stark mad.
