THE WOES OF STEERAGE PASSENGERS.
Serious complaints are made by third* class passengers, just arrived by the lonic, about the food and sanitary arrangements of tho vessel. They have drawn up a document, which has received signatures of a Committee of six appointed on behalf of 75 passengers, representing, with wives and families, 191 persons. Copies will be lodged with tho immigration agent bore, and others forwarded to the Board of Trade in London and to the Secretary of State for the Colonies. the closets were insufficient and indecent; that the p -rt-boles could not bo open even in the finest weather ; that except to hospital patients, no fresh meat was issued during the voyage; that, the salt meat was so bad as to be uufit for use ; that the crew interfered with and used bad language to them ; that they were subjected to annoying restrictions owing to Government immigrants being on board ; that certain officers were disobliging ; that proper lights were not provided ; and that the ship was insufficiently found in boats in case of accident. They admit their satisfaction with the conduct of the captain and most of the officers.
