The Aborigines Protection Society have written a letter to Earl Derby, Secretary of State for the Colonies, regarding ibo projected annexation of New Guinea. The Society urges that the island should bo annexed by Great Britain as a Crown colony, instead of being placed under the jurisdiction of the Queensland Government, animad : verting upon the outrages which are alleged to have been committed by the Queensland police upon the natives of that colony.

BankingThe total reserve in the Bank of England in notes and bullion has decreased by £500,000 during the week, and is now £9,800,000. The proportion of reserve to liabilities has further fallen to 32 per cent. The Bank rate of discount remains at 4 per cent; the market rate has fallen. J, and is now 3f. CommercialConsols have declined to 102£. New Zealand securities remain as follows 5 per cent 10-40 loan, 106 ; 5 per cent 1889 loan, 103£exdiv.;41- percent 1879 1904 loan, 102£; 4 pb* cent inscribed stock, 102£. / The markets for colonial produce are unchanged. At to-day’s wool auction.,lo,3oo bales were offered. A fair demand was again experienced.
