LATE CABLE NEWS.

(Per steamer at Wellington.)

[By Telegbaph.J

THIS DAY.

“ Age ” Special,

London, April 17.

A disastrous fire broke out in London lust night. It originated in Rose street, which leads from Newgate street to St. Paul’s Churchyard, and spread with alarming rapidity. Before the progress of the dames could be arrested, the buildings were completely destroyed, including the premises of Messrs C. Kegan, Waul and Co., and of Mr Kingsbury, the well-known publisher. St. Paul’s Cathedral was illuminated in a brilliant manner by the fire. The fire is now subsiding. A departure in the tactics of the Irish conspirators is reported. It is stated that as the systed of employing dynamite to effect their purposes has proved unavailing, the leaders of the Irish League intend to abandon that policy. The report is regarded with suspicion.

The Government of Madagascar have consented to submit to the terms proposed by France, and a definite amicable arrangement has been entered into. France will accordingly withdraw the war vessels which have been employed in blockading Madagascar ports.
