Retired from the Contest* Wellington, April 21. Mr Dwan has telegraphed to the Reefton papers announcing that in consequence of his not having received a requisition in terms of his address he has retired from the contest in favor of Mr E. Shaw. Commutation of Sentence. The Governor have commuted the sentence of death passed at last sitting of the Supreme Court, Christchurch, on the Native named Eatima Jacob, who murdered bis wife at Jlaikoura, to imprisonment for life. The Frisco Mail ServiceGovernment has received information that the motion respecting the renewal of the Frisco Mail service bad not yet been received by the New South Wales Parliament.
