London, April 6.
The condition of the poorer classes in the United Kingdom at the present time is exciting a considerable amount of attention, and several schemes for the alleviation of their distress have been proposed. A central association has now been formed in London for the purpose of promoting emigration to the British colonies from among the unemployed.
Mr Childers, Chancellor of the Ex. chequer, delivered his Budget speech in the House of Commons this evening, and received general congratulations for the excellent and clear manner in which he placed the whole financial position before hou. members.
A commercial treaty has been signed between Spain and Germany. This will have the effect of terminating the difficulties which have frequently arisen between the two countries in regard to the tariff.
Sir Garnet Wolseley has announced his intention of attending the corona, tion of the Czar, which is to take place at Moscow next month.
It is reported that the Czar has decided that bis coronation shall not take place on the 27th May as originally arranged. The reason for the postponement is not known, but it is believed that the recent declaration of the Nihilists have contributed to the result.
Herr Most, late editor of the “ Frieheit,” who was imprisoned for the publication of inflammatory articles recommending regicide, has issued another manifesto, in which he continues to urge and justify the murder of monarchs.
The Right Hon. Dr. Lyon Playfair, who recently retired from the position of Chairman of Committees’ deputy in the House of Commons, has received the Order of Knight Commander of the Bath.
Mr Holt, M.L.C., the New South Wales Vice-President at the International Fisheries Exhibition, to be held in London next month, has arrived. Mr Bonnard, the Executive Secretary for New South Wales at the late Bordeax Exhibition, has also arrived.
at Birmingham were destroyed last night. The excitement in town was intense.
. The panic which has arisen in England consequent upon the report of the action of dynamite parties, has excited comment, and it is feared that the example set by the Irish agitators will be followed by similar organisations in Euorpe, and that the agency of dynamite will be resorted to.
The recent outrages perpetrated by the dynamite party in England have aroused a strong feeling of disgust throughout America, and it is probable that in the event of the English Government applying for the extradition of those who have taken a prominent part in the recent conspiracies, the authorities of the United States will accede to their request.
