THE LATEST DEVELOPMENT OF NIHILISM.
Intelligence, a startling light upon the ramifications of the Nihilist conspiracy in Russia, has, the St Petersburg correspondent of the “ Daily Chronicle ” says, just reached here from Vladimir in the Government of Volhynia. It appears that several persons occupying high social and official positions in the district have recently received a number of threatening letters signed by the “Socialist Committee.” One of these, documents was addressed to no less a person than the Governor himself, and threatened him with death unless he forwarded a sum of 3000 roubles to a place named by a certain day. A trustworthy person was sent to the appointed spot, which was carefully watched by a strong body of subordinate officials. At midnight the mysterious author of the letter made bis appearance to receive the money, and was recognised by the watchers, to their utter bewilderment, as the Chief of Police. He was instantly arrested, and remains in strict confinement. On examination it was found that his writing corresponded with that of the threatening letters. The affair has caused an immense, and; by mo means pleasant sensation, particularly in official circles, ;■ .
