TIMARU BOROUGH COUNCIL.

An ordinary meeting of the Council was held last night. Present—His Worship the Mayor, Crs Sntter, Bush, Delaney, Allen, Jones, Hill, Sherratt, Bower, Bowley and Annetts. COEEESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was read : From the contractor for the Otipua Waterworks Extension, asking for an extension of time. No notice was taken of the application. The Waterworks Inspector wrote specifying the work that remained undone on the Otipua contract. The Inspector of the Public Works department wrote 1 asking for certain concessions re water supply and connections, to the gaol. The Council decided to proceed with the work mentioned, when the Council’s conditions in certain matters, are complied with. From Mr Henry Ford, on behalf of the Athletic Club in reference to the water supply, WOEKS’ EEPOET. The report of the Foreman of .Works having been read, the following resolutions were passed—“Tthat the plans for filling up Brown street and cutting down Rose street, as laid on the table, be adopted.” Councillor Gibson moved, and Councillor Sherratt seconded—“ That the Foreman of Works be instructed to replace the timber lamp posts, whore rotten, with new iron posts, and get the other lamps put in thorough good repair.” ueinals. The question of erecting public urinals within the Borough was brought up and Cr Hill moved, and Cr Cr Allen seconded —“ That the Works Committee bo requested to select sites for public urinals in the vicinity of the Ship Hotel and the Bank of New Zealand, and report to next meeting of the Council.”

In speaking to the motion Or Hill pointed out that it was a great public inconvenience, and a disgraceful circumstance that there were no conveniences of this kind.

Cr Sutter was opposed to the scheme at present. He thought those at the new railway station large and convenient enough, and easy uf access. Gr Bower agreed with Cr Hill, and thought the scheme should be carried out at once.

The motion was carried. It was resolved to have a statement of the financial position of the Borough laid on the table at next meeting; to place a lamp at the junction of Heaton and Rose streets ; and to endeavor to obtain from the harbor authorities a refund of the expanse incurred in the burial of the whale on the beach beyond ■Bruce’s mill. ‘ General satisfaction was expressed at the manner in which Mr Hatton had executed certain castings which had been ordered from him. ACCOUNTS. The following accounts were passed for payment:—Special rate account £36 19s Gd ; general, £193 13s 3d; deposit, £32 6s 7d ; loan, £362 13s Id ; maintenance, £174 8s 6d. The meeting terminated at 8.30 p.m.
