THE MAJOR ON THE STUMP.
[By Telegraph.]
Invercargill, April 7. To-day Major Atkinson was interviewed by parties mostly with reference to local matters. To-night he addressed a meeting in Sloan’s Theatre. The Mayor occupied the chair, and about 400 persons were present. The subject of his address was the prevention of pauperism which he treated in similar language to that used in the Northern towns. On Monday morning he receives a deputation from the Chamber of Commerce re freights by measurement on the port lines of railway. An elaborate table, explanatory of it, has been pr - pared by Mr Geo. Nicho>, showing the extraordinary comparative charges by weight and measurement. At noon, Major Atkinson turns the first sod of the Seaward Bush Railway at a point about three-quarters of a mile from town, on the Bluff line.
