HEAVY SEA IN THE ROADSTEAD.
DAMAGE TO SHIPPING. A great deal of anxiety was occasioned very shortly after noon to-day by the threatening appearance °t the weather. The sea had been riaing since yesterday afternoon, and had gathered strength until about mid-day, when a very heavy sea set in from the southeast, accompanied by strong gusts of wind. There was general anxiety as to the safety of the shipping. The Margaret Galbraith, at the outer anchorage, appeared to he riding easily enough, but the Ugglan and the Bewa which lie moored just inside theßreakwater were laboring heavily, as the full force of the sea came upon them the line of the Breakwater. The Waitaki was also moored near jhem ; but: the three were in father too close proximity. The barque Rewa yesterday went alongside the Breakwater; but, last night, as the weather appeared threatening she was hauled off some little distance. About one o clock one of her mooring chains parted and she swung round coming into violent collision with the Swedish shipUgglan, which lay near her, carrying away bodily the rudder of the latter, and damaging her own forerigging. The tug Titan was at this time engaged in towing in a newly arrived vessel, the Lovejhert, from Adelaide. Having brought her to an anchor at the outer holding ground, she came in to bring the Ugglan well within the shelter of the Breakwater, but the Titan appeared unable to effect anything. By two o’clock a crowd had begun to gather near the Breakwater, and continued to increase as the position of the vessels and the increasing violence of the sea gave rise to fresh anxiety. The sea is at this time very heavy and grave fears are entertained for the safety of the shipping. , w . The sea, at the time or our going to press, had gone down considerably, anti there appeared no special cause for uneasiness.
