AUSTRALIAN NEWS.

Melbourne, March 13.

Edward Latham, proprietor of the Carlton Brewery, contemplates making a present to the Anglican Church of Victoria of a novel as well as a useful kind, consisting of a building at Queenscliff, to be known as the Sanatorium, costing, when finished, over £IO,OOO. It is to be held for the use of sick and overworked clergy. No definite management has as yet been formulated, but it is expected it will be managed by a Board of clergymen, with the Bishop at the head. It is expected to be open in about two months.

A telegram has been received here stating the Privy Council have overruled the Judges’decision in the case of the steamer Ferret, which was taken about three years ago and sold in Melbourne by a person named Henderson. The crew instituted a claim for wages, which was disallowed by the Chief Justice. The Privy Council, however, have upset the judgment and allowed the claim.

The case of McGregor versus the Board of Works was decided yesterday. The plaintiff who is salesman to McLean Bros, and Eigg was injured in the Hawthorn railway accident and permanently crippled. The jury award £3OOO damages. Many other cases have been tried, bat in all of them small damages have been awarded. The City Coroner held an inquest yesterday on the body of a man unknown who committed suicido in Flagstaff Gardens by blowing himself up with dynamite. The deceased placed u quantity of the explosive on the ground, and then lay down and lighted a fuse. A good deal of surprise is manifested here at the result of the cricket match, Victoria uersus the Hon Ivo Bljgh’a team. The Englishmen seemed quite puzzled by Cooper’s bowling in the lirst innings.

Sydney. Mr Dalton, J.P. o£ Orange, presented an address to Mr Redmond, slating amongst other things, that if Australia was called on to submit to a tithe of the injustice Ireland was suffering, a bloody revolution would speedily result. Mr Dalton has been called on by the Government for an explanation. It is probable that when Mr Taylor and Mr Mcllhone resume their places in the House some explanation will be called for as to their conduct in putting the country to the expense of two elections.

The work of cleaning tho Austral is being continued. She will be docked to-morrow in tho Fitzroy dock, and her coal taken out. Captain Sladen, who takes her Home, has arrived.
