Napier, March 16, The weather for the second day’s races was again favorable and the_ attendance was larger than on the previous day. The first event was the Grand Stand Handicap of 150 sovs; distance, 2 miles.

Luna 1 Louie ... 3 Leonata 3 There was a dead heat for second place. Libeller, Lenora and the Laird were left out of the race, not being at the post at the time of starting (12.50 p.m.,) although they were on the course. There is great public dissatisfaction with the starter, who was liberally hooted at weighing in. The inside totalisator paid a dividend of »ix guineas. Louie led off with the start and maintained the same for three parts of the distance with Luna last. Luna then forged ahead, quickly passing Leonata and Louie, and coming in an easy winner. Mischief and Hippodamia were scratched. After the race Captain Russell, President of the Club, addressed those present. Ho said that he had to apologise for his horse Leonora, which the public had been good enough to make a favorite, not starting. It must be considered that a clumsy start had been effected, which left three horses out of the race, but he wished to exonerate the starter from all blame as it was his duty to start the race punctually. (Cries of dissent of numerous voicee—“Why did he not start punctually then.”) Provincial Produce Stakes, of 100 sovs. Weight for age. Distance, 1 mile. Carmen ... 1 Ngaro filly 2 Pastime 3 This race brought out a field of seven.
