WAIMATE COUNTY COUNCIL.

At the meeting of the Council on the 9th inst., the following correspondence between the Council and the Government, relative to works in the district under the “ Roads and Bridges Construction Act,” was rer.d. The Chairman had sent a telegram on the Ist instant, viz., “ Waimate County Council’s application for £40,000 was made under clause 19. to find £2500 cash, balance by special rate. Government have offered £BIOO, provided Council ffnd £2500 in cash, under clause 18. Will Government grant £BIOO, Council to find £675 cash, balance by special rate secured to the Government by debentures under clause 19, as applied for." The reply to this was : —“Minister directs me to say that County can either take the whole and arrange to pay quarter as provided in the Act, or may find proportion in cash. This alteration in the amount to be found in cash alters the amount of grant. If the County Council wishes to find £675 in cash then the Government grant will be £10,222,and will be in two sums—£2o2s under section 18 and £8197 under sections 11 and 51, and on your reply being received letters to this effect will be Bent.—(Signed) C. T. Bexzoni.” In reference to this Mr McGregor moved, and Mr Manchester seconded—- “ That the terms of grant under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act referred to in the Under-Secretary’s letter, dated February 16th, be accepted by this Council, and that a reply to this effect be forwarded at once to the Minister.” As an amendment, Mr Hayes moved and Mr Hardie seconded—“ That this Council decide to accopt the offer made by the Government in their telegram of 6th inst., the Council to find £675 cash and provide £2025 under clause 18 of the

Hoads and Bridges Construction Act, and also that the Government find £8197 and the Council provide one-fourth of that amount, under clause 19, and that, the Clerk take the necessary steps to cany out the conditions of Hie Act." After a very animated discussion the motion was carried.
