NEWS OF THE DAY.

The Borough Council will meet this evening? The Frisco mail arrived here yesterday at noon by special train.

It is said Mr Milner Stephen is to be proceeded against for false pretences. The stamp revenue for the past eleven months amounts to £401,393. Telegraphic communication is interrupted between Fort Darwin and Java.

No persons have been nominated to servo on the Fareora Licensing Committee.

There are, in the Auckland district, 16 lodges of the M.U.0.F., with 1120 members. Six hundred acres of coal-bearing land have been discovered at Cabbage Bay, Auckland.

Acceptances for the Great Autumn Handicap and Christchurch Steeplechase close to-night. Professor Ward, of New York, has sent a number of valuable exhibits to the Auckland Exhibition,

The Auckland police are making continued raids on the publicans for the prevention of Sunday trading. His Excellency the Governor inspected Brown, Ewing and Co.’s drapery establishment in Dunedin, on Saturday. It is expected that Major Atkinson will address the people at . Christchurch on Monday next, and then proceed South. Kincaird, McQueen and Co., engineers of Dunedin, have constructed for the Mosgiel Woollen Factory, the first steel boiler ever made in the colony. One Inkster, at Auckland, yesterday threw a piece of bone, some meat, and a knife, at his wife’s head. She fell down unconscious and was removed to the hospital. It is believed that her brain is injured. Long service pay is to be granted to noncommissioned officers and constables of the police force from Ist proximo at the rate of 6d and Is per day for those who have served five and ten years respectively.

The body of Snsan Duncan, a woman of indifferent reputation, has been found floating in the Auckland harbor, A dingy has also been found floating with a man’s hat and a woman’s umbrella in it; and Charles Baker, a sailor of the schooner Saxon, is missing.

Mr Fernox Wilson some time ago submitted to the Otago Harbor Board a scheme for the removal of the bar at the mouth of Dunedin Harbor. The Board declined to consider the scheme; but some reasonable persons in Dunedin propose to get up a public subscription, and invite Mr Wilson to lay his plans before the public at large. If it proves to be what he says it is, the public will speedily compel the Board to adopt it. There is a slight collision between the Church powers of the R.O. diocese of Auckland. Mr Redmond, the Land League apostle is to visit that city shortly and preparations are being made to welcome him. The Bishop has addressed his clergy, urging them to discountenance the visitor, but it is said several of them will disregard the episcopal injunction. Such a position indicates the strength of ihe Irish feeling on.the subject.

On Saturday afternoon, some distance above the Public School in North Street, Mr J. South of Wai-iti was driving home with bis son, when . the horse shied and caused the buggy to capsize. Mr South was severely injured, several, of bis ribs being broken and bis head injured, while his son bad one of his legs broken. Mr South was unconscious for some hours, and though both are now doing well, he is suffering very much from the shook to his system.

The people of Ballarat are indignant that the Angl jean Bishop should be giving to the Home people the impression that the diocese of Ballarat Ts' in a state of heathenism and poverty. They have accordingly despatched the following telegram to the Victorian Agent-General with a request that it may receive as wide publicity as the Bishop’s utterances : 11 Ballarat residents desire emphathic denial regarding unfounded statements of their heathenism and poverty, alleged by Bishop Thornton in England.” Talk of commercial moralty, indeed 1 it is sometimes better than episcopal morality. The first century made in the Cup matches at Christchurch, initiated this season, fell to the veteran A. M. Ollivier, who played an exceedingly fine innings of 109 for Lancaster Park against the Midland C.G. Club on Saturday. If Lancaster Park wins this match they win the Cup, and as they have only lost five wickets for 242, they have a very good show. Yesterday W. J. Cotterill also made 70, not out, and the previous Saturday T. Buchanan scored 96, both in the Cup matches. The Cup matches have been wonderfully successful. Three or four finishes have been close.

The “Leader” says that Russia is beginning to find out her mistake. The Jews within her borders have been oppressed and persecuted, and the remonstrances of their brethren in other lands have availed them little or nothing. Now Russia wants to raise a couple of loans for fourteen millions or thereabouts, and applies to the Rothsohilds for it. Israel’s turn has come, and the great financiers decline to find the money. They intend to devote themselves entirely to India—that is to say, to the eastern portion of the empire that has steadfastly befriended their race. The probablity is that wherever Russia turns for aid she will find a Hebrew coalition against her.

Some specimens which were taken out of the Golden Crown claim, Wellington, have been reported on as follows by Dr W. Skey, of the Geological Department:—“ Two large pieces weighing nearly 2041b5, taken from one part of the reef, were coarsely broken and the fragments well mixed, and from the heap a sample was taken for amalgamation. This sample yielded gold at the rate of 340 z 2dwts 12grs per ton. The gold is of the same quality as that hitherto found in the reefs in this district, being worth about £3 per ounoe. The gold will be assayed at once, and the result communicated. I should state that there is but very little gold visible upon the pieces as sent, but a great deal showed whoa they were crushed.

The Timaru and Palmate Cricket Clubs played a match on Faturday, on the 'Jimaru ground, the Timaru Club winning by six wickets.

A well-known resident of Timaru has shown us a letter he received the other day from Mr T. E. Price, formerly resident in Timaru, and now living at Masterlon, stating that Mr Milner Stephen has effected some astonishing cures, to his (the writer’s) personal knowledge.

The criminal sessions of the District Court will open on Friday next before His Honor Judge Ward. At present there are two cases set down for hearing—one of conspiracy, against the Ryan family ; the other of fraudulent bankruptcy, against Patrick Byan. James Moyles who is charged with indecent assault upon a child in Timaru, left Timaru on the 26th ult. and made his way to Wellington. Detective Kirby, however, traced him, and transmitted to the authorities in Wellington such information as enabled them to arrest him at once.
