GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of the Board was held on Tuesday last. Present —Mr 3 Wm Postlethwaite (Chairman), and Messrs’ Wm. Upton Slack, Frederick E. Flatman, apd Wm. De Renzy. TENDERS. The following tenders were accepted: No., 27,;Skinner’s road—A. McCool, £32 10s. No. 32, Shingling Foster’s .road—S. Curtney, £92. v No. 33, shingling Collet's road—F. Molloy, £lO6 17s 6d. No. 35, Dr Fish’s-J. Webb, £27 10s.

CORBBSFONDEKCX.' The following correspondence was read.

From Mr P. H. Clark, asking for an extension of time for clearing gprse off roads on Opoha run. Application granted. From Mr John Marsbtnan, with reference to the reserves in the district. The matter .was prdered to stand over until the Chairman could hand over the schedule brought before the Assembly on September 8. From Mr O. G.. Tripp, calling the attention of the Board to gorse growing in the various river-beds. Resolved—“ That the Board considers it has no power to expend funds upon the river-beds in clearing gorse, but will represent the matter to the Government."

From Mr J. Marahman, re the destruction of theßaukapuka bush. Resolved—“ That the Board accept the terms mentioned in Mr Marshmun’s letter, and advertise that all offenders will be strictly prosecuted as the law directs.”

From the Assistant Engineer, with reference ,to putting a level crossing over the railway at 83£ miles. From Mr William Coltman, enclosing two resolutions passed at a public meet* ing asking the Board to take the neces r sary steps to bring the “ Regulation of Local Elections Act” into force in the Geraldine Boad Board district. Resolved—“ That Mr Coltman be informed that the new Road Board Bill has passed into law, which provides for future elections of local bodies.” From Mr John Mundell and a number of ratepayers, requesting the Board to widen the road from Peckbam’s corner to the Orari railway station. Resolved— 1 “ That the Board is of opinion that the work asked for is not necessary.” From Mr John Allan, enclosing account for one-half cost of fencing gravel reserve in Pleasant Valley, Resolved—“ That the Board cannot entertain the application,’ as the Board repaired the fence only a few months ago.” . From Messrs Smith and Dennistoun, requesting the Board to fence one side of Reserve 1733, and plant the same in autumn, and asking permission to take off a second crop of turnips. Resolved! “That permission be granted for turnips, and that most probably the Reserve will be required in the autumn.”

From Messrs Moore Bros., requesting the Board to carry out the work already ordered to be done on Gapes' Valley Downs. Besolved—“ That the Board does not see the necessity of altering their decision.”

From Mr J. W. Jones, asking the Board to call upon Mr Wigley to remove his gates off the roads on the Opoha run, and offering, his house to the Board. Kesolved—“ That Mr Jones state •what he wants for his house when the Board will consider it," From Mr J. M, Barker asking for the road running through US. 19931 to 20804 to be made passable. Resolved—'“ That the Overseer inspect the land, and if necessary for the working of the property, construct the road ; it otherwise, the work not to be done." INTERVIEWS. Mr Joseph Lewis waited upon the Board in support of a petition tojopen out the Boundary road near Winchester. <

Eesolved—“That Mr William De Eemsy accompany the Overseer to inspect the road applied for by Mr Lewis.”

■ ' Messrs Amos, Sherratt, and J. P. Ealangher waited .upon the Board; to urge that a road leading to their bhsh section be made. -

Eesolved—“ That a short length of road be formed near to Gripp’scor-: : ner.” RATES. Proposed by Mr Slack, seconded by Me Flatman and carried—“ That the resolution passed by this Board on July 11th, 1882, viz:, ‘lt is the intention of the Geraldine Road Board to strike a raterfmr charitable aid' purposes,' be rescinded.” Proposed by Mr Slack, seconded by Mr Flatman, and carried—“ That a rate of 6d in the £ be levied on all rateable property in the district for the year ending 31st December, 1882, the same to bo payable in one sum on the ’2oth day or September, 1882.” Proposed by Mr Slack, seconded by Mr JDeßenzy, and. carried—“ That Mr Sbiers and Mr C. E. Sherratt be appointed collectors of the rate. The collectors to be at the Eoad Board Office,' Qeraldine.on Tuesdays and Saturdays in each week, between the hoars of 10 a.m. and 4 pm. to receive soohr^tes.” OVERSEER’’# REPORT. . ; The Overseer’s report was read 'and the following resolutions passed thereon:—(l)The ’penalty ’’ of £2 being deducted from the balance of Guldan’e contract at Wells’ Cutting ; Timothy Sugrab’s contract to be allowed to be passed by the overseer ' (3) the Board approve of the. Overseer letting Mr Dierck the Contract for finishing' the contract at stone bridge, near Combes’ place,'for £9 10«; (4) the Overseer to fix a time for, Mr HuflEey to finish bis contract atSpeechley’s Crossing; (s)the Overseer to arrange as to the drain with Mr Townseiid and make: the road through the swamp; (6) repairs to be done at Mr Millard’s house when the rent is, regularly paid ,up ; (7) one month’s extension of time to be,granted for'occupiers of laud to clear gorse off public roads in the district, since the farmers have made good' progress during the past mouth ; (8) the work to be done on Brown’s road as suggested by the Overseer. •("- ■ SANITARY. The Inspector of Nuisances’ report was read and considered and approved by the Board ; the sanitary state of the district Being good, ' STRAY CATTLE, Resolved—“ That Mr Andrews’ attention be called to the fact that there are a number, of animals straying on the roads in the district.” FINANCIAL. It wa'S’resolved; on the motion J bf Mr Black, seconded by Mr Postlethwaite—“That out’ of the £7OOO maturing on the 15th and 19th September, the following sums, be re-deposited, with the Bank of New South Wales, Geraldine, at the highest rate of interest, viz., £4OOO for twelve months,, £IOOO for six months, £IOOO for three months, and £IOOO, with interest, to be placed to the current account.*' Accounts to the amount of £B2l 12s lid wore passed for and the Board then adjourned until October 10,
