Wilkin and Co., report for the week ending Friday, August 18, as follows : - Horses For last Saturday’s sale they offered an average number, in addition to drays, traps, harness, &o. _ The greater number offering are only medium animals. Farmers and contractors, indeed, seldom, unless they are selling off, place their good stock in the market; but when they do, are geneially rewarded by obtaining good prices. The demand for draughts, especially young stock, is good. The low prices ruling for some time are passed, and they look for a healthier tone in the horse trade generally. They quote Good draughts, £3O to £35 ; medium, £2O to £25 ; hacks, from £l3 to £l7 ; light, £4 to £B.
Cattle—Prime beef is in pood demand, and ss Us fi eely at 25s per lOOlbs. Privately during the week they have sold several small lots at quotations. At Washdyke yards on Monday last they yarded 91 head of various sorts, principally young steers and heifers. Tfiey sold 3 heifers at £3 10s
25 steers and heifers at £4 2s 6d, 3 steers at £4loc), 8 steers at £5, 3 fat steers at £7 12s 65, 3 steers, at £5 I Os, and other lots of mixed stores at £3 10s to £4. At Winchester Fair yesterday they yarded 73 head, and succeeded in selling over 40 at the following price : —Fat, from £6 7s 6 J to £8 2s 6d; store steers, £4 4s ; heifers, £2los up to £4; 23 head yearlings, at £2. The demand for milch cows and springers is nothing like the supply, consequently it iswith great difficulty sales are effected. Store cattle ranging from 18 months to 3
years old, both heifers and steers, es--1 pecially the latter, are in very good demand, and meet with a ready sale at full rates. Sheep.—Prime fat crossbreds are selling from 15s to 16s, equal to 2Jd per lb. At these rates they have placed privately two stnalllots through the week. At Washdyke yards on Monday, only a small entry came forward. The only sale effected was a small lot at 12s 3d, Store sheep are
selling well. Good hoggets are in demand, also ewes in lamb, either cross-bred or merino. Privately during the week they have disposed of 280 merino, in lamb, at 7s; 80 hoggets at 7s. Sheepskins,—On Wednesday, 16th inst., at their wool sale rooms they held their usual fortnightly sale. They catalogued
1639 skins, The attendance of the trade being above the average, every lot was keenly competed for, resulting in a clearance of the whole lot at the following prices:—Best butchers crossbreds made ss, 55,6 d, ssßd 5s lid, up to 6s 4d ; second quality, 3s 6d,3s 9d,45,4s 6d, 4s Bd, up to 4s lid ; best merinos, 3s 4d, 3s 7d, 4s, 4s 4d, 4s 6d, 4s Bd, up to 6s ; second quality, 2s, 2s 6d, up to 3s2d; dry and inferior, Is, Is 6d, to Is lid each.
! Wool-5 bales, scoured, at H4per lb ; 2 bags at 6|d ; 2 bags merino, ?|d ; 2 do, cross-bred, 6d; locks and pieces, 2|d per lb. Hides—The market is at last quotations. Properly-trimmed heavy wet-salted ox hides aife worth 3|d per lb, at which price they sold 36. Tallow—All lots coming to hand are readily disposed of at 2d to 2£d per lb.
