The Literary and Debating Society meet to-night, when Mr James Bruce will deliver an address on his “ Tour through America.” There should bo a large attendance.

The public meeting advertised to take place in Messrs R. Wilkin and Co.'s auction room, on Saturday next, to consider the present inequalities in the railway tariff and suggest amendments, has been postponed till Saturday August 5, as the Committee has not yet been enabled to prepare the necessary statistics.

The Timaru Intellectual Improvement Society met last evening when Mr A. Cuth* bert read an excellent paper on Music, having especial reference to the tonic sol-fa system. This was followed by an essay on Byron, by Mr Glasson, which was very well received, and showed considerable acquaintance with the subject. Reuter’s agent in Wellington has been careful to explain that an error in grain quotations some time ago was caused by the Sydney agent quoting New South Wales wheat instead. of New Zealand. In this case the quotation was higher, and against the grain buyers, , but some months ago, when Mr Watkins, the manager of the Canterbury Fanners’ Co-operative Association, pointed to several discrepancies in the actual prices for grain in London as compared with Reuter’s quotations, Renter’s representative was silent. In the latter cases Reuter’s quotations for wheat in London were lower than the London price then ruling.
