PICTON COAL.
The Picton CoalJCompany’s prospectus is just issued. Their local broker is Mr David Stuart, of Strathallan street. Wo have satisfied ourselves of the excellence of this coal as an article of fuel, for though gaseous it gives off no disagreeable smell, and the Government analyst speaks very highly of its quality. The fixed carbon it contains, this gentleman gives at 63'21 parts, and its hydro-carbon at 31-06. The coal deposits which the company is working are situated in Shakespeare Bay, Queen Charlotte Sound, and also in the immediate vicinity of the town of Picton; and the mines are conveniently situated on the shores of the harbor. This will be’ much appreciated by masters of steamers, and will do away with the necessity for’ so many coal depots. The opening of the coal seams on the West Coast and at Picton is very satisfactory to record, for the development of so important a source of wealth cannot but materially assist the progress of the Colony.
